Kabukimono III will coincide with the Opening Day of Kyōsai: The Israel Goldman Collection at the Royal Academy. Nicknamed  ‘Demon of Painting’ because of his superabundance of application and talent, the nineteenth-century artist, Kawanabe Kyōsai, is one of the most distinguished personalities in Japanese art and belonged to the line of exponents of ‘performance’, (literally ‘acrobatic art’) (kyokugaki), that included Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849) and Tani Bunchō (1763-1840) in the generations before him. Establishing himself as an independent artist in 1854, his career, until his death in 1889, spanned this extraordinary time of crisis, confusion, and of breathtaking changes in thought, technology…
