About the event

We are delighted to announce that Kabukimono III by Suleiman Suleiman will take place at Over-Seas House, in Park Place, St James’s, London, on Saturday 19th March at 7pm. It will be a pleasure to welcome you. Tickets are £12 and can be purchased from the event website here.

Kabukimono III will coincide with the Opening Day of Kyōsai: The Israel Goldman Collection at the Royal Academy. Nicknamed  ‘Demon of Painting’ because of his superabundance of application and talent, the nineteenth-century artist, Kawanabe Kyōsai, is one of the most distinguished personalities in Japanese art and belonged to the line of exponents of ‘performance’, (literally ‘acrobatic art’) (kyokugaki), that included Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849) and Tani Bunchō (1763-1840) in the generations before him. Establishing himself as an independent artist in 1854, his career, until his death in 1889, spanned this extraordinary time of crisis, confusion, and of breathtaking changes in thought, technology and institutions in Japan, that not been witnessed since the wholesale adoption of Chinese Tang culture in the seventh and eight centuries.

Kabuki plays are written afresh for each programme and to suit the particular cast of the moment, and in this spirit Kabukimono III will feature a new play, The Picture Book, by Suleiman Suleiman, inspired by Kyōsai.

After the 30-minute seated performance of  The Picture Book there will be an interval for guests to enjoy drinks, either in the English Garden overlooking Green Park or at the bar, before a Q&A about the art of kabuki.

English Garden Lounging will present ambient and electronic DJ soundscapes throughout the evening until 11pm.

Dress Code - ode to kabuki's highly-stylised aesthetic.

Pay-bar until 11pm.

Please arrive at 7pm for performance beginning at 7.30pm.
